Drought Response Project (WFP)

From January 1 to March 31, 2020, the Services of Women Relieve Center for Afghanistan (SWRCA), in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP), implemented a large-scale Drought Response Project in Farah Province. The intervention was designed to provide emergency food assistance to families severely affected by drought and facing heightened food insecurity.

Objectives

  • To address the immediate food needs of drought-affected families.

  • To ensure vulnerable households had access to essential and nutritious food supplies.

  • To strengthen family resilience and stability during periods of crisis.

Activities

  • Beneficiary Targeting: SWRCA identified 10,113 vulnerable families most affected by drought through transparent selection processes.

  • Food Distribution: A total of 1,820 metric tons of food commodities was distributed, including wheat flour, cooking oil, salt, and split peas.

  • Ration Allocation: Each family received 179.96 kilograms of food, sufficient to support their basic nutritional requirements for the project duration.

  • Accountability & Awareness: Families were informed of their entitlements, schedules, and complaint mechanisms to ensure fairness and transparency.

Achievements

  • Delivered emergency food assistance to 10,113 families across Farah Province.

  • Improved household food security by ensuring access to essential staple items.

  • Reduced hunger and the risk of malnutrition among drought-affected communities.

Impact

The project played a vital role in alleviating immediate hunger among thousands of drought-affected households. By providing essential food commodities, it not only stabilized household nutrition but also reduced negative coping strategies, thereby enhancing family resilience and community well-being.

This initiative demonstrates SWRCA’s strong commitment to supporting communities impacted by natural disasters and delivering effective, timely, and accountable humanitarian assistance across Afghanistan.
