Carpet Weaving Project (UN-CDAP)

In 1998, the Services of Women Relieve Center for Afghanistan (SWRCA), in partnership with the United Nations Community Development Assistance Program (UN/CDAP), implemented a Carpet Weaving Project in Khaki-Safid District, Farah Province. The initiative was designed to empower vulnerable women by providing them with sustainable livelihood opportunities through traditional carpet weaving.

Objectives

  • To enhance the economic independence of women-headed households (HHs).

  • To provide professional training in carpet weaving, quality control, and workplace hygiene.

  • To promote income generation, social cohesion, and community reintegration.

Activities

  • Skills Training: A total of 48 female-headed households were trained in advanced carpet weaving techniques, including design, weaving quality, and finishing skills.

  • Material Support: Beneficiaries were provided with raw materials such as wool, dyes, and tools to begin production immediately after training.

  • Production & Marketing: Women were supported in producing carpets for sale, enabling them to generate income and contribute to household stability.

Achievements

  • 45 women gained new vocational skills, improving their long-term livelihood prospects.

  • Beneficiaries successfully produced high-quality carpets that were marketable and income-generating.

  • Increased awareness and practice of hygiene standards in carpet weaving, contributing to healthier working environments.

Impact

The Carpet Weaving Project not only provided sustainable economic opportunities for women but also enhanced their confidence and social standing within the community. By enabling women to earn income and contribute to family well-being, the project strengthened economic empowerment, social cohesion, and community reintegration in Khaki-Safid District.

This initiative highlights SWRCA’s long-standing dedication to women’s empowerment, skill development, and livelihood support programs across Afghanistan.
