Carpet Weaving Project (UNHCR)

In 2002, the Services of Women Relieve Center – Afghanistan (SWRCA), in collaboration with UNHCR (Sub-Office Herat), implemented a Carpet Weaving Project in surrounding villages of Farah Province. The project aimed to empower women-headed households by providing vocational skills, promoting income generation, and fostering social reintegration.

Objectives

  • To provide women-headed households with skills in carpet weaving, quality control, and hygiene practices.

  • To increase household income through the production and sale of high-quality carpets.

  • To promote women’s empowerment and facilitate socio-economic reintegration.

Activities

  • Skills Training: Trained 48 female-headed households in carpet weaving techniques, hygiene standards, and quality control.

  • Material and Technical Support: Beneficiaries received raw materials and ongoing technical guidance to produce marketable carpets.

  • Community Engagement: Encouraged women’s active participation in income-generating activities and local community life.

Achievements

  • 48 women-headed households gained professional carpet weaving skills.

  • Increased household income through the production and sale of carpets.

  • Improved production quality and adoption of hygiene practices in weaving activities.

  • Enhanced women’s social reintegration and participation in local community life.

Impact

The project significantly contributed to women’s economic empowerment, household livelihoods, and social inclusion. By equipping women with marketable skills and supporting their productive engagement, SWRCA strengthened sustainable livelihoods, community cohesion, and long-term socio-economic reintegration in the targeted villages of Farah Province.
