Between 2017 and 2018, the Services of Women Relieve Center – Afghanistan (SWRCA), in partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP), implemented a large-scale drought response project in Farah Center. The project was designed to address the urgent needs of returnee and host families severely affected by prolonged drought conditions.

Objectives

• To provide immediate food assistance to drought-affected returnee households.

• To improve household nutrition and reduce the risk of hunger-related illnesses.

• To strengthen community resilience and coping capacity against future droughts.

Activities

• Beneficiary Selection: SWRCA identified 3,000 vulnerable families most affected by drought through fair and transparent processes.

• Food Distribution: A total of 600 metric tons of food commodities were distributed to ensure families had sufficient access to staple foods.

• Community Outreach: Awareness sessions were held to inform beneficiaries about their entitlements and available complaint mechanisms.

Achievements

• Provided emergency food support to 3,000 families experiencing acute food insecurity.

• Improved nutrition levels and reduced hunger in drought-affected communities.

• Strengthened trust between humanitarian actors and local communities through transparent and accountable assistance.

Impact

The project played a crucial role in mitigating the effects of prolonged drought by ensuring that vulnerable returnee households had access to sufficient food. It not only alleviated immediate hunger but also contributed to building resilience and reducing the vulnerability of communities to future droughts.
