Kariz Cleaning Project (UNHCR)

In 2003, the Services of Women Relieve Center – Afghanistan (SWRCA), in collaboration with UNHCR (Sub-Office Herat), implemented the Kariz Cleaning Project in surrounding villages of Farah Province. The project aimed to restore local irrigation systems, ensure food security, and provide income to vulnerable community members through a cash-for-work program.

Objectives

  • To rehabilitate 22 kilometers of irrigation systems (karizes) to restore agricultural water access.

  • To provide immediate income opportunities for local laborers through cash-for-work.

  • To enhance community resilience, food security, and social cohesion.

Activities

  • Labor Engagement: Engaged 200 local laborers (male and female) to participate in cleaning and rehabilitating irrigation systems.

  • Cash-for-Work Payments: Participants received fair compensation for their work, providing immediate household income.

  • Community Coordination: Worked with local communities to ensure equitable participation and proper maintenance of irrigation systems.

Achievements

  • Successfully restored 22 kilometers of karizes, improving water access for farming households.

  • Provided income opportunities for 200 local laborers, contributing to household financial stability.

  • Strengthened community collaboration and social cohesion through joint participation in project activities.

Impact

The project enhanced agricultural productivity, improved food security, and increased household income in the targeted communities. By combining infrastructure rehabilitation with cash-for-work, SWRCA promoted both sustainable resource management and community resilience, while supporting vulnerable households to meet their immediate needs.
