Poultry Project (UN-FAO)

In 1996, the Services of Women Relieve Center – Afghanistan (SWRCA), with support from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), launched a Poultry Project in the surrounding villages of Farah Province. The project aimed to strengthen women’s livelihoods and improve household food security by promoting small-scale poultry farming.

Objectives

  • To provide female-headed households (HHs) with sustainable income-generating opportunities.

  • To improve household nutrition and food security through poultry production.

  • To empower women socio-economically and support their reintegration into community life.

Activities

  • Poultry Distribution: Each of the 10 female-headed households received 10–15 chickens, along with poultry feed and veterinary care.

  • Training & Capacity Building: Beneficiaries were trained in poultry management, including feeding practices, hygiene, egg production, and disease prevention.

  • Veterinary Support: Regular follow-up ensured the health and productivity of the poultry provided.

Achievements

  • 10 women-headed households established small-scale poultry businesses.

  • Improved household nutrition through consistent access to eggs and poultry products.

  • Increased household income, enabling beneficiaries to cover essential expenses.

Impact

The project significantly enhanced the economic independence and social participation of women in Farah Province. By generating income and improving nutrition, the initiative helped families access better education, healthcare, and community opportunities.

This project demonstrates SWRCA’s early and continued commitment to women’s empowerment, livelihood creation, and sustainable community development in Afghanistan.
