Poultry (Chicks Reproduction) Project (UN-CDAP)

In 1998, the Services of Women Relieve Center – Afghanistan (SWRCA), in partnership with the United Nations Community Development Assistance Program (UN/CDAP), implemented the Poultry (Chicks Reproduction) Project in Farah Center and surrounding villages. The project aimed to empower women-headed households by enhancing poultry production, improving nutrition, and generating income.

Objectives

  • To strengthen the economic independence of women-headed households through poultry farming.

  • To improve household nutrition and food security via egg and poultry production.

  • To encourage active participation of women in local markets and community life.

Activities

  • Skills Training: Trained 30 female-headed households in chick reproduction, feeding, vaccination, and hygiene.

  • Distribution of Chicks: Each household received 10–20 chicks along with guidance on proper care and management.

  • Capacity Building: Beneficiaries received ongoing support to improve production, hygiene practices, and market participation.

Achievements

  • 30 households gained practical knowledge in poultry reproduction and management.

  • Increased household income through the sale of poultry products.

  • Enhanced household nutrition by providing a consistent source of eggs and meat.

  • Strengthened women’s engagement in community activities and local markets.

Impact

The project improved economic resilience, nutritional security, and social empowerment for women-headed households. By equipping beneficiaries with both skills and resources, SWRCA helped families achieve sustainable livelihoods, improved health outcomes, and active community participation.
